Marina Rousseau is a visual artist specializing in oil painting, acrylics, and mixed media. She works on a unique linen surface stretched over board, which allows her to capture the fine details that have become a defining characteristic of her work.
Her paintings explore a wide range of subjects, including human and animal portraits, farmscapes, still lifes, and wildlife. Through these themes, Marina expresses a deep sense of observation and emotion, often portraying scenes filled with sentimentality and nostalgia inspired by the times and places she experienced while growing up.
Marina was born and raised in the deep Kalahari district of South Africa. Surrounded by the vast landscapes of sand dunes and camel thorn trees, she developed a profound appreciation for nature, animals, and the quiet relationship between people and the land.
Many of her fondest childhood memories come from long visits to her “Ouma’s” smallholding, where she spent time caring for chickens, donkeys, and other farm animals. These experiences continue to influence her work and frequently appear as subjects in her paintings.
Her art unashamedly celebrates the soul of quiet moments — distant farms, humble animals, and the beauty of a simpler life.
Guided by the philosophy that one cannot truly appreciate the vastness of the universe without respecting the smallest details of everyday life, Marina seeks to capture these moments through careful brushwork and thoughtful composition.
Through her paintings, she hopes that a small piece of this captured soul will resonate with viewers and transport them back to their own cherished memories and shared experiences.
Marina’s work is exhibited regularly at the Pretoria Boeremark in South Africa.
